Music of “The People”
WVEE, V-103 The People’s Station, has been the number one station in Atlanta for years. Is this because of the way they market their station through social media? Or is it because the surrounding demographic is most interested in Urban music? Or perhaps a combination of the two? With an average quarter hour (AQH) figure of more than 52 thousand, the station consistently ranks as #1 among Atlanta’s radio listeners. The station also has over 73,000 Facebook likes and over 17,000 Twitter followers. With its high ranking among, is V-103 doing anything with social media than other stations are not doing to extend their listening audience?
V-103 has very basic Facebook and Twitter pages. They consist of updating listeners on new music, events and contests. So what is it that makes this station number one? The hosts and DJs on the station are very prominently known. They each have their own social media sites and seem to connect with their listeners on a personal level. While V-103 has a large online presence through its well-know hosts and DJs, I think a large part of an urban station’s popularity is going to be what type of music they play and how much they actually interact with listeners on-air. WVEE refers to their station as “The People’s Station.” Using this tagline, they are showing the station really connects with listeners and is part of their listeners lives through playing music and providing program that “the people” want to hear. In this case, I think social media only contributes in small part to their popularity. It seems it’s their on-air programming that drives the most interest in the station. Stay tuned…
